Ski & Sail Lyngen - March 20
From Tromsø, we set sail aboard our exclusive 12-passenger yacht to explore the ski touring peaks of the Lyngen Alps. Each day, we anchor in secluded bays or small fishing villages and set out on a ski tour amidst the breathtaking scenery — the glittering white mountains contrasting with the deep blue sea.
Afternoons and evenings are spent fishing on deck, enjoying a glass of wine in the wood-paneled saloon, or relaxing in the warm hot tub on the ship’s aft deck. A quick dip in the cool waters of the Norwegian fjords refreshes tired legs, readying them for the next day’s ski adventure.
Each day a new adventure
As Ylva sails between anchoridges and harbors, new peaks and new possibilities emerge.
Departure from Tromsø, the “Paris of the North.” Famous polar explorers such as Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen set out from Tromsø by ship on their expeditions. We won’t be venturing quite as far from civilization, but secluded bays and little-visited ski touring mountains are still the goal of this Ski & Sail tour.
At the harbor, your skipper will already be waiting for you. We’ll spend the first night in the harbor of Tromsø. The welcoming pubs and bars of the “Paris of the North” provide a great way to kick off the ski touring week.
Early in the morning, we leave the harbor and set course for the islands of Vannøya and Arnøya, about five hours away. The first breakfast on board, right in the middle of the fjord, is something special—just like our first ski tour in the area around Vannøya and Arnøya.
Several ski touring options are available on the approximately 700-meter-high mountains, and depending on the conditions, we’ll choose the best destination. From the summit, we enjoy our first panoramic view over the islands north of the Lyngen fjord and can already spot some of the touring objectives for the coming days.
The first descent takes us back down to the ship, after which we move a bit south to the island of Kågen. In the evening, we inaugurate the hot tub on the aft deck with a glass of red wine, enjoying the sunset from the ship.
On the island of Kågen, there are several longer ski tours to choose from — routes that are rarely visited and accessible only by boat. Once again, we’ll select the best destination based on conditions.
In the afternoon, we sail about 3–4 hours south to the island of Uløya. Those who are interested can watch the captain at the helm and perhaps even take the wheel themselves for a while.
We set out from Uløya for another ski tour to the highest mountain on the island. While the ship moves to its next position in Hamnnes, we carve our turns down wide slopes toward the sea, taking in the panoramic view of the Lyngen Peninsula.
In Hamnnes, we restock our provisions and spend the night in the harbor. There’s nothing to stop us from enjoying another soak in the hot tub afterward.
Today, the local mountain of Hamnes entices us with its summit slope. If all goes well, we’ll be able to visit our friend Alf in Koppangen, which serves as the base for our Lyngen ski touring trip without the ship.
Not far from Koppangen, we anchor in a small bay and set out to climb one of the most beautiful peaks of the Lyngenfjord. A short steep section leads us onto the glacier, followed by a gentle stretch before the final ascent to Tafeltinden.
A 1,400-meter descent awaits us back down to Koppangen, from where we set sail again, crossing to the opposite side of the fjord toward Nord-Lenangen.
The final tour to Ullstinden awaits. We set out directly from the boat on our last ski tour, climbing up to the summit. With one last view of the sea, we descend on the far side toward Snarby, where our ship picks us up again.
We then sail for about three more hours back to Tromsø, spending the night on board. To cap off the trip, we enjoy the lively nightlife in one of the city’s pubs before finally turning in for the night.
After breakfast onboard in Tromsø harbor, there is time to exchange pictures and some final stories before we part ways, happy with a collection of new unique memories.

Nice to know
Here are some common questions from our guests.
We provide a full board to all our guests on Ylva, and it is our goal that your experience with us is one of warmth and comfort.
We serve 3 delicious meals each day; Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Usually, lunch is taken on the slopes, and we provide options to pack and bring your own from the boat in cooperation with the guide. There is always snacks and fruits available should you feel the need for more energy. Coffee, tea, juice and milk is complementary. Beer and wine is for sale on board.
Your bunk is equipped with comfortable linen and a warm down duvet. There are towels and soaps for your use in your bathroom.
Sailing in the Arctic can be cold and windy in winter. However, Ylva is a large boat, and only rarely will there be much sea spray over deck. Your skiing gear - goretex trousers and jackets, with proper woolen layers as well as mid-layers underneath, will usually be sufficient.
However, Ylva has an indoor steering house, so going on deck to work the sails is only done during manouvers and sail changes, and assisting the crew in these phases is a voluntary experience.
Tromsø Airport (TOS) has direct routes from may European hubs. There a several flights from Oslo (OSL), Norways capital, every day.
When you arrive, taking the bus or a taxi from the airport to the downtown central harbor takes only 20 minutes.
Please respect the check-in time, as the crew needs to ready the boat from the last tour. However, should you arrive early we can arrange to store your luggage while you tour Tromsø.
You will receive more detailed information after you book your tour.
Yes, each cabin has a private shower and toilet, except one of the forward cabins (nr. 2) that shares these with the guides. Towels and toiletries are provided.
We provide protected storage for all skis in large crates on deck. Ski boots are kept in a locker behind the steering house, to save space inside. All your equipment is safe from sea spray and other sources of dirt.
Indeed there is!
We fill it up with sea water and heat it with a wood-burning stove. Our goal is to fire it up at least a couple of times each trip. The stove can comfortably hold six people, but a couple more can fit between good friends.
On a boat, we strongly recommend that you pack in soft bags that can be rolled up and stowed away. A suitcase would pose a problem to store in your cabin.
As you are a skiier, you are probably well aware of how to dress in winter conditions. Just make sure you keep in mind that the wind in Norway can be strong, adding to the other challenges of low temperatures and humidity.
